KON GmbH, founded on 28 June 2000, is a specialist Internet Holding- and Management- Company, which currently has a 100 percent holding interest in three companies. The function of the parent company consists of the accountancy, financial planning, organisation and personnel departments, while the subsidiaries are responsible for the operative business. The core business of those are the provision and development of Internet services, the marketing of websites and the registration of domainnames. Due to the core activity of its subsidiary, IT takes the central position at KON GmbH. The business, located in a modern computer center in the heart of Duisburg, runs high-capacity Gigabit-connections, which, together with the use of Linux as stable server software, guarantees the smooth operation and consequential growth of the company.

Philosophie

Founding of !FACT BBS

1992

Co-founder and main shareholder Uli Klinkhammer recognised the importance and possibilities of the Internet at an early stage. He has been a freelance businessman since 1990 and in 1992, together with Stephan Michalski, he started the !FACT BBS. The mailbox system was connected directly to the Germany-wide Z-NETZ, enabling thousands of e mails to run through the system daily. This system was upgraded to a Fido-Z-NETZ-Gateway in 1993.

Founding of Rhein-Ruhr.De

1994

The move into the Internet took place in 1994, with the foundation of the Rhein-Ruhr.de domain. Through the installation of a leased line into the Internet, it was possible for Klinkhammer's customers to connect to the worldwide web and be the first to experience the total "Joy of Surfing". In 1995, together with Stephan Michalski, he published his first WWW server.

Opening of KomPlex Systemhaus, Duisburg

1996

In 1996, he founded KomPlex Systemhaus and through this, expanded his offer to the business division.

Launch Freepage.de

1998

Two years later, he created an online platform for free homepages, namely Freepage.de. At that time it was the only possibility for free hosting available in the German web.

Founding of FreeCity GmbH

2000

Together with his former fellow student Michael Fass, Klinkhammer Online was founded on 1 December 1999, under the name of KON GmbH. After only three months they had revolutionized the German Internet with its worldwide- unique, advertising-financed domain service, FreeCity.de.

Founding of KON AG

June 2000

In Summer 2000, KON GmbH became FreeCity GmbH and the proprietary company, KON AG was created.

Founding of KONTENT GmbH

2000

The realization of the difficulties of maintaining a profit with a purely advertising-financed service caused the management to create a commercial service for professionals, as an addition to FreeCity, in Spring 2000. In October 2000, this idea was brought online with "KONTENT - The Domain Specialists" under the newly founded KONTENT GmbH.

Founding of KomPlex.Net GmbH

December 2001

KomPlex Systemhauses was taken over in December 2001 and consequently renamed to KomPlex.Net GmbH. All technical programming tasks there were merged, and as an ASP-Provider (Application Service Provider), KomPlex.Net GmbH became the third subsidiary of KON AG.

Founding of AdSponse Media GmbH

September 2003

In September 2003, AdSponse Media GmbH began operating as the fourth subsidiary. The concept of the online marketing agency directly addresses the target audience through effective campaign positioning in the Internet. The principal goal of the business operation is achieving customer satisfaction for both advertising agencies and the media. This satisfaction is achieved via individual supervision and personalized strategies.

New self owned Data Center in Duisburg

2005

In 2005, the construction of the new technology centre, together with the strengthening of its infrastructure with diverse fiber-optic cables and the connection to important Peering-Points, have established KON AG as the leading competitor in the German Internet world.

New Headquarters in Duisburg, Germany

January 2006

In January, 2006 all KON companies moved from their old office into a brandnew renovated, 1000 sqare meters office right beside the Ruhr river. One of the advantages was the better price, the other one the nearness to the KON data center. Office and data center lie on same terrain.

Acquisition of Ampira GmbH

April 2006

In April, 2006 is was possible to acquire Ampira GmbH, formerly Fortunecity.de GmbH. At this moment Michael Meisterling joined the board of managers as CMO.

Michael Fass leaves the company

December 2006

Later in 2006 the board decided together with cofounder and boardmember Michael Fass that he should leave the company. The reason were the lack of revenues beside FreeCity. Michael went out on 31st of December of 2006. As he leaves he acquires the AdSponse Media GmbH.

KON AG becomes KON GmbH

March 2007

On March, 28 of 2007 the company was transformed into a limited company (KON GmbH). This was posible due to the fact, that main shareholder Uli Klinkhammer went 100owner by acquiering the shares held by the rest of the partners.

Michael Meisterling leaves the company

April 2007

In April 2007 Michael Meisterling, the CMO of the company, resigned. He decided to move to London, UK. This was unconventionable to the goals of the company. But he followed in partnership with KON working as freelancer.

New principal shareholder in Uruguay

August 2008

One year after, in August 2008 Klinkhammer sells all his shares to the Uruguayan Investment Company OROGRAM S.A.

Merger Komplex.Net + KONTENT

August 2008

On 6 of August 2008 Komplex.Net GmbH merges with KONTENT GmbH. All customer contracts are overtaken.

Merger FreeCity + KONTENT

March 2010

On 25 of March of 2010 FreeCity GmbH merges with KONTENT GmbH. The customer contracts are continued by KONTENT.

KON starts investing in new creative Social Community Software "beadz"

January 2011

Since January 2011 KON invests in a new form of Community Software based on mulimedia videoclips, developed under the roof of the mother company.

Acquisition of nutelan, baregrin and bluepin S.A.

May 2011

In May 2011 KON GmbH takes over from Uli Klinkhammer the Uruguayan companies nutelan S.A., baregrin S.A. and bluepin S.A.

Start of KONTENT Latinoamérica S.A.

May 2012

Since May 2012 bluepin S.A. trades under the name of KONTENT Latinoamérica S.A.The latinamerican market entry is prepared.

Stop of investments in the uruguayan beadz project.

December 2015

On 1st of December 2015 the KON GmbH acquires from nivegal S.A. Uruguay all property rights on the “beadz for Windows” and the “beadz messenger for Android” applications. A further development was not possible because of several reasons. Both products are nearly ready to market.

Closing of nutelan and baregrin S.A.

December 2017

In December 2017 the closing of nutelan S.A. and baregrin S.A. is decided.
